The Thrill of the Teesta River Rafting Adventures

Teesta River along with its tributary Rangit, makes one of the finest river rafting stretches in the world. The Rangit River, along with its turbulent waters and multidimensional rapids, offers rafters the perfect arena to test and hone their rafting skills. Alongside this, the Teesta River lines along breathtaking scenery to make your adventure more memorable.

Teesta River starts from the Pahunri glacier standing high up at a height of 23,189ft in the Sikkim Himalayas. The river’s bank is lined up with pristine white sand and the course is flecked with large boulders, making it one of the premier rivers for rafting in Northern India.

Most Teesta River rafting trips begin at Melli Bridge and conclude at Geilkhola in Kalimpong. All through the way, you’ll encounter roller-coaster rapids that are sure to give you chills down your spine. The trail also offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of the villages situated on both sides of the river with cultivated lands and the vibrant culture of Northeast India.

Choosing the right level

River rafting features five grades of rapids, ranging from grade 1 with small and easy waves to grade 5 with extremely difficult and violent rapids. Each one accounts for different difficulty levels. If you’re a newbie or someone who has never tried rafting before, it’s best to start with grade two and three rapids. However, if you’re an experienced rafter, feel free to take on the challenge of grade 4 and 5 rapids.

Although both Teesta and Rangit offer rapids of all grades, Rangit is known for its higher-grade rapids due to turbulent waters and intense flow. While Teesta is often the first choice of beginners and non-swimmers for a safer experience. Nonetheless, the courses are well-marked and organizers are always available for your guidance.

Teesta Bazaar is the most famous place to start your rafting adventure. The journey begins at Tarkhola and extends up to Kalijhora. Here are some rafting courses you can choose from:

  • Tarkhola to 29 Mile – 3 hours
