Unveiling the Story Behind the Stambheshwar Mahadev Temple Kavi Kamboi

Stambheshwar Mahadev Temple

Have you ever seen a temple disappearing with time? Sounds fishy yet interesting, right? But to be honest, there is one such temple in India that fascinates everyone. This story is about the Stambheshwar Mahadev Temple in Gujarat or the Gayab Mandir.

History Behind the Stambheshwar Mahadev Mandir

The Stambheshwar Mahadev temple is a 150-year-old shrine. It is believed that the Devas (Gods) headed by Lord Kartikey established the Stambheshwar Mahadev linga after slaying a demon named Tarakasur.

Legends say that despite being a demon, Tarakasur was a huge devotee of Lord Shiva. He performed different penances (Tapasya) to please lord Shiva. Impressed by his dedication and devotion, the lord asked him to ask for a boon. To this, Tarakasur asked for a powerful boon that protects him from death and makes him immortal. But as death is inevitable, Lord Shiva asked him to wish for something else.

Hence, this time he wished for a blessing that stated that ‘Only the six-day-old-son of Shiv would be able to kill me. Lord Shiva granted him the wish whereafter Tarakasur started creating havoc in all three worlds. He mercilessly slaughtered devatas and caused huge destruction.

In order to put an end to this havoc, Lord Shiva, with the flame of his third eye, created Kartikey. Kartikey ultimately became the reason for Tarakasur’s death.

While everyone was celebrating the death of Tarakasur, Kartikey was disappointed by his act. He regretted killing the demon as he was a great devotee of Lord Shiva.

Thereupon, Lord Vishnu consoled him that killing someone who nourished himself on the blood of innocent beings is not a sin but rather an act of valor. But as Kartikey still felt guilty for his deed, Vishnu advised him to install Shiva Lingas at the site where Tarakasur was executed. Hence, as a gesture of appreciation, Kartikay established a Shiva Lingam to absolve his sins.

What’s So Unusual About the Stambheshwar Mahadev Temple?

Stambheshwar Mahadev Temple, Kavi Kamboi

The Stambheshwar temple is said to disappear twice a day. But where does it go? Does it actually vanish from its position? Well, that’s not actually the case. The thing is that the temple stands only a few meters away from the seashore.

Hence, during the high tide hours, it gets submerged in the ocean and reappears as the level starts to settle down. And this is what usually creates the conception of “disappearance” among the devotees. According to the records, the entire Sanctum or “Garbha Griha” is submerged in the seawater and only the tip of the temple structure is seen above water.

The Best Time to Visit Stambheshwar Mahadev Temple

The best time to visit the temple is during the Shravan Maas i.e., from July to August. However, make sure to plan your visit in a way that you get enough time to experience both the disappearing and reappearing phenomenon.

For this, you’ll need at least an entire day so that you can visit the temple during the early morning during the low tide hours and see Mother Nature herself perform the Jai Abhishek of the almighty with the high tides. Meanwhile, you can also stroll around the surrounding area of the temple enjoying a walk on the seashore.
